Cory Mac upset by Lucas in opening round
JOLIET, Ill (October 3, 2004) -- After an amazing weekend of qualifying in the #1 spot and being the first Top Fuel driver to break into the 4.40 seconds since the new nitro fuel mixture, Cory McClenathan, driver of the Berryman Products/CARQUEST Auto Parts Top Fuel Dragster, failed to make it out of first round of eliminations losing to Morgan Lucas.
"We really thought we had a good car here and the numbers were showing it," McClenathan said. "The car was in trouble from the get-go. As soon as I hit the gas it was in trouble. It just really bit us; it's just really bad timing."
The dragster lost traction and smoked the tires around the 330-foot mark and Lucas drove away for the win.
"Lucas and the team did their job, and they did an awesome job," McClenathan said about his opponent. "The kid left on me and did his job; there's nothing else you can say about that."
The team plans to stay through tomorrow to test the car for the next race in Pennsylvania.
"We need to make this a consistent race car," McClenathan expressed. "We'll do what it takes to make it that way. We just need to make sure that we can go from starting to half track. This smoking the tire stuff has got to stop."
The Carrier Boyz/Berryman Products team's next race will be the 20th annual NHRA Lucas Oil Nationals on October 8-10, 2004 in Reading, Penn., to make up for the rain-out on September 16-19, 2004.
