Herbert, Snap-On Dragster Impressive in Run to Lucas Oil Nationals Semifinal Finish
JOLIET, Ill., June 3, 2001 - It was a turn-around of impressive proportions.
Doug Herbert, who had not advanced to the semifinals at any of the first nine NHRA national events this year, did so Sunday during the Lucas Oil Products Nationals at Route 66 Raceway. He not only made it to the semis, but the Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster's performance was its best of 2001.
Herbert turned in his quickest time in two years during qualifying, 4.558 seconds, and had his fastest run since 1999, 320.51 mph. The showing not only gave Herbert and his crew a big confidence boost, it also pulled him within 32 points (513-481) of seventh place Tony Schumacher in Winston Series standings.
During a weekend when Kenny Bernstein set a new Top Fuel elapsed time standard with history's quickest run (4.477 seconds), Herbert had an important streak of his own - 4.608, 4.607, 4.558, 4.561, 4.565 and 4.599 seconds. The first three came in qualifying, the others Sunday in eliminations.
"We needed to pick up our performance," Herbert commented after his quarterfinal win over Darrell Russell. "We did that Saturday night (when he ran the 4.558 to qualify fifth) so they (Russell's crew) knew we could run 4.55 . . . and we dropped a cylinder three and a half seconds into the run."
Herbert's 4.565 beat Russell to set up a semifinal battle with Bernstein. The Snap-on dragster gave Bernstein his best battle of the day - 4.599 at 316.82 to 4.533 at 323.81 - but couldn't stop his run to the race win.
"We have a good racecar," Herbert added with a smile. "We ran 4. 4.50s (seconds) in a row."
And the weekend's accomplishments showed it.
Now crew chief Larry Frazier and the crew return to the team's Cherryville, N.C. shop after three straight races. They get a weekend off before reporting to Columbus, Ohio for the Pontiac Excitement Nationals, June 15-17, at National Trail Raceway in nearby Kirkersville. <pre> Qualified: No. 4.558 at seconds at 317.22 mph.
