JOLIET, Ill., June 2, 2001 - The top Pro Stock Truck drivers in the NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series did battle today in the third annual Holley Pro Stock Dominator Duel. When it was over the last driver standing was Jeff Gracia, driver of the Panella Trucking GMC Sonoma.
In the finals the California native defeated Todd Patterson in the Dodge Motorsports Dakota R/T with an elapsed time of 7.441 seconds at 181.64 mph to Patterson's 7.447 seconds elapsed time at 181.54 mph. The margin of victory was eight-thousandth's of a second.
Gracia defeated Mike Coughlin in the first round and teammate Bob Panella Jr. in round two en route to GMC Sonoma's first-ever win in any form of professional motorsports. John Lingenfelter in the Summit Racing GMC Sonoma also reached the semifinals before losing to Patterson.
"This was a good day for the entire Panella Trucking race team, and it's quite an accomplishment winning this Holley Dominator Duel," said Gracia, who also reached the finals earlier this year in the Advance Auto Parts NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway. "We caught a break when Bob had his problems in the semifinals, and then in the finals we just had a good, close race. That was just a good ol' fashion race between manufacturers, GMC Sonoma over Dodge.
"I'm in select company with Bob (Panella) winning the first Dominator Duel and Randy Daniels winning last year. And it's great that we got GMC Sonoma its first win. Hopefully we'll need some more of these GMC winner's circle hats before the year's out."
The Holley Pro Stock Truck Dominator Duel is an invitational eight-truck competition based on qualifying performances over the last 14 events beginning with this event last year. The top eight qualifiers included No. 1 qualifier and inaugural Holley Pro Stock Truck Dominator Duel champ Bob Panella Jr. in a Chevy S-10, defending event champion Randy Daniels, Greg Stanfield, and Mike and John Coughlin, all in Chevy S-10s, Jeff Gracia and John Lingenfelter in GMC Sonomas, and Todd Patterson in a Dodge Dakota R/T.
