Herbert qualifies Snap-on Tools dragster in the top half of the field in Chicago
CHICAGO, IL, qualifying: Doug Herbert qualified the Snap-on Tools/Doug Herbert Performance Top Fuel dragster in the top half of the field for the fourth time this season at the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals in Chicago. Herbert made three consistent runs in the low 4.50's during the rain-shortened qualifying at Route 66 Raceway and will go into Sunday's eliminations starting from the No. 4 position.
With a solid cloud cover and cool temperatures throughout the day, the conditions were ripe for great performances at Route 66 Raceway on Friday. Herbert began the weekend by making his quickest run of the season, blasting into the No. 2 qualifying position with a stout 4.507 at 317.57 mph. After their solid opening run the Snap-on Tools team prepared for Friday's evening session with great anticipation. After waiting until almost 11 p.m. to finally go down the track, Herbert set low elapsed time for the second session with a 4.520 at 313.15 mph to remain in the No. 2 spot.
Saturday began cold and rainy at the world's quickest drag strip. The NHRA began trying to dry the track around 10 a.m. and they continued into the afternoon. Once professional qualifying began it was interrupted several times for lengthy rain delays. Herbert was one pair away from making his third qualifying run when the rain came again. The Snap-on Tools team rolled the car under the tower and waited for the wet stuff to stop. When it finally did, Herbert made another great run with 4.542 at 321.35 mph, finishing the session in the No. 4 position. The final round of qualifying was scraped due to all the rain delays and Top Fuel field was set with Herbert facing Morgan Lucas in round one of Sunday's eliminations.
"We had the most consistent car during qualifying this weekend," said Herbert at the end of the day. "The crew won the Full Throttle Pit Crew Challenge again and that is a good sign that the Snap-on Tools team is coming around and getting better. We have a car that definitely has the potential to win the race tomorrow."
