Herbert looking to turn season around in Chicago
CHICAGO, IL, pre-race: Doug Herbert will be looking to turn his season around with a solid performance this weekend at the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at record-setting Route 66 Raceway, 30 miles south of Chicago in Joliet. The driver of the Snap-on Tools/Doug Herbert Performance Top Fuel dragster will be seeking to maintain his solid standing in the Top 10 in the POWERade Drag Racing Series point standings with a good outing.
Herbert has enjoyed a tool box full of success at the Route 66 Raceway in the past; including a semifinal finish and a runner-up in one of his four final round appearances last season. 'Dougzilla' also won the fall event in 2004 with a thrilling victory over Tony Schumacher. This year the NHRA will only make one stop at the world's quickest quarter-mile and the timing is perfect for the Snap-on team. After Herbert's quarterfinal finish in Topeka two weeks ago, the team felt they may have turned the corner with the tune up, and Chicago is the perfect place to get the Snap-on Tools dragster back on the winning track.
"There is no doubt we've been struggling some this season, but we've also been learning a lot along the way," said Herbert. "I think we finally have a handle on the new Goodyear tire and we've worked out the kinks with our new Murf McKinney chassis, so it's a good time to race at a track that has a reputation for great performance. I've always enjoyed racing at Route 66 and we usually do very well there. We will be entertaining a lot of people from Snap-on and we really want to put on a good show for all of them."
With 14 races remaining on the 2006 NHRA schedule, a victory at Route 66 Raceway would be a huge momentum boost for Herbert and the Snap-on Tools team.
