JOLIET, Ill (June 10, 2005) -- He made two good passes in the Snap-on Tools Top Fuel dragster Friday and that's a great way to start the weekend.
Doug Herbert and the Snap-on team are in the No. 3 position in qualifying at the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway. Herbert drove to the top half of the field with a 4.530-second pass at 317.87 mph.
"That was a great second run tonight and it was exactly what this team needed to boost our morale," Herbert said. "We made a good run in the first round and improved on that run during the second session."
Herbert has qualified third twice this season (Phoenix, Houston). Qualifying continues at noon Saturday. Final eliminations are set for 11 a.m. Sunday.
"I doubt if anyone will be able to improve on the performance numbers (Saturday)," Herbert said. "We got lucky with some cooler weather tonight after a couple of short rain delays. That helped keep the track temperature down and let us tune the car for a quick pass."
The high qualifying position helps the team in several ways.
"We need to get back into the Budweiser Shootout (Top Fuel bonus race) and we need to qualify high every weekend. We also need to start accumulating more points because that's how we are going to make our way back up the point standings. Every qualifying point helps."
Herbert, the 2004 fall event winner at Route 66 Raceway, will have several special guests Saturday. Herbert will be joined by a VIP group of Marines that have recently made their way home from overseas combat duty. The soldiers that will be joining Herbert next weekend in Joliet are: Cpl. Patrick Hilty of Park Ridge, Ill.; Sgt. Kevin Perez of Alsip. Ill.; LCpl. Joseph Ochoa of Woodridge, Ill.; LCpl. Christian Ramirez of Chicago; LCpl. Jose Maldonado of Chicago; Cpl. Eric Weber of Rockford, Ill.; Cpl. James Tucker of River Grove, Ill.; Cpl. Lee Cannon of Naperville, Ill.; Cpl. Mark Gannon of Chicago and LCpl. Chris Bay of Joliet.
ESPN2 will air coverage of this weekend's event starting with qualifying at 6 p.m. (ET) on Saturday. Final eliminations will start at 3 p.m. (ET) on Sunday. NHRA 2Day can be seen at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday on ESPN2.
