JOLIET, Ill. (June 1, 2001) -- Todd Patterson and the Dodge Motorsports Dakota R/T managed the ninth-qualifying position after the first day of activity for this weekend's Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway. The Augusta, Kan., resident clocked a 7.494-second elapsed time at 179.83 mph during today's second Pro Stock Truck session.

"We had a mechanical problem in the first round," said Patterson, talking of his 7.58-second pass in round one. "The transmission jumped out when I pulled it into second gear. The motor went against the rev limiter at about 10,400 rpms. When it hit the limiter, the transmission popped, and decided to back into gear and went on down the track.

"I knew if we cleaned the run up that we would get in," Patterson continued. "It seemed to be a little bit slower session tonight with the storm front moving in and the barometer dropping. We're just glad to get in because you just don't know what the weather is going to do. Now, we've just got to tune up to run tomorrow morning and get ready for the Holley Pro Stock Truck Dominator Duel."

Patterson will face Greg Stanfield in the first round of the Holley Dominator Duel.

Morgan Solidly In

Dodge Motorsports R/T Pro Stock pilot Larry Morgan clicked off a 6.902-second lap at 199.37 mph to grab the 13th-qualifying position. Morgan clocked his run during the first session, which seemed like the better of the two.

"I'm really happy about running that good down the right lane in the second session," said Morgan, who ran a 6.91-second lap. "We were one the quickest cars down in that lane. When you get to that bump in the right lane, it just goes out of control. I feel good about tomorrow because we'll be back in the left lane. All you can do is go after it tomorrow."

Alderman Grabs 15th

Darrell Alderman utilized the second-qualifying session to grab the 15th position with a 6.903-second pass at 199.11 mph. The three-time Winston Pro Stock World Champion recovered from a mechanical problem in round one.

"I milked it for everything it had," Alderman said. "We dropped a cylinder in the first round and it put us behind the eight ball. I just wanted to get it down the track and in the show. You just never know what the weather is going to be like tomorrow."

Alderman's teammate Mark Osborne is hoping for better weather tomorrow, as the Abingdon, Va., resident missed the top 16 with a 6.923-second elapsed time at 199.73 mph.

"We didn't have the right set up," Osborne said. "We shook the tires and I got out of the groove a bit. That right lane is a tough one to get down because of the bump. We'll work on it a little and get into the show. I hope it doesn't rain tomorrow."

Skuza Struggles

Dean Skuza, driver of the Mopar Parts Dodge R/T Nitro Funny Car, collected the 15th position after posting a 4.996-second elapsed time at 292.98 mph during today's first-qualifying session.

Skuza suffered clutch woes during the second pass, shutting his machine off at about 500 feet.

"We broke a stall stud in the clutch," Skuza said. "We're hoping for dry conditions tomorrow because we need to improve. I'm really worried about the weather."

Smith Manages Ninth

Rickie Smith drove his Team Koretsky entry to the ninth slot following the first day of qualifying. Smith, who will soon be running a semi-factory backed Mopar Pro Stock entry, clicked off a 6.893-second lap at 199.88 mph during the first session.

"We were way too light on the clutch in our second run," Smith noted. "We did make a good run in the heat of the day. We should have been able to run a 4.88 or 4.89 in the second session, but we just missed it. Overall, I'm pleased that we're in the show."

Team Koretsky owner and driver Kenny Koretsky was on the outside looking in with a 6.918/198.67 combination.

"We're looking good with Rickie's new set up," Koretsky said. "The car's running much better and I think we'll get in."
