Wells looking to repeat last year's Route 66 win.
JOLIET, Ill. - Defending NHRA Division 5 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion David Wells had his run to the Division 5 title start with a win at last year's Division 3 opener at Route 66 Raceway just outside Chicago. This weekend, Wells and his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" team hope to do the same during this year's Division 3 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series opener there.
Wells, from LeMars, Iowa, cites that despite winning there last year, he has an entirely different motor combination that he will be trying to figure out this weekend. He feels with the new 'technology' in this combination, once he gets it figured out, he will be stronger than ever.
"We won this race last year," said Wells. "We have a new motor combination in the car for this year, though. We have been running fair, but not up to potential, so we kind of turned the thing upside down again to see if we can't make it run a little bit better. The first couple of passes will be sort of test passes to see how it goes, then we'll step on it a little bit."
"This is an entirely different combination from last year," Wells continued. "The motor is a completely different configuration. We're just going to have to work with it until we figure it out."
Qualifying begins at 4 p.m. Friday for the Top Alcohol Dragsters, with two more sessions on Saturday. Final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
