JOLIET, Ill. (May 23, 2004) -- Former owner (David Baca) met former driver (Cory McClenathan) in the opening round of the NHRA Route 66 Nationals. McClenathan drove the Henkelman & Baca Motorsports dragster in 2002. Baca took over the driving duty in 2003.

Baca, in the American Racing Top Fuel dragster, gave up a little at the start to McClenathan, at the finish line it was McClenathan crossing first in a great drag race.

Baca ran 4.544 seconds at 323.58 mph to 4.511 seconds at 324.90 mph for McClenathan.

Crew chief Johnny West indicated that the team was satisfied with the run.

"Although you are never satisfied with a loss," said West, "we are satisfied with the run. We set out to run near our qualifying time of yesterday and we did that. We are beginning to show some consistency and look forward to that continuing at Topeka."

Baca, with 340 points, leaves this event in the 11th position in the NHRA POWERade Top Fuel point standings, just two points behind Doug Herbert in 10th.

Next up for Henkelman & Baca Motorsports is the NHRA O'Reilly Summer Nationals presented by Castrol GTX, the third of back-to-back-to-back races and the third of six races in a seven-week span. The event unfolds at Heartland Park Topeka in the Kansas capital town next weekend May 27-30.
