ANTRON BROWN HAS FLAIR FOR DRAMATIC AT JOLIET, MAKES FIELD ON FINAL QUALIFYING ATTEMPT
JOLIET, Ill. (June 5, 2010) - Antron Brown, a two-time winner at Route 66 Raceway, raced his Don Schumacher-owned Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster to the No. 8 qualifying position Saturday afternoon at Route 66 Raceway near Chicago. Entering the final qualifying session on the outside looking in, the 24-time NHRA winner clocked an elapsed time of 3.872-seconds to position his Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster in the field for Sunday's final eliminations.
After lengthy weather delays on the opening day of qualifying for the 13th annual United Association Route 66 Nationals, Brown carded an opening run of 6.847 seconds at 91.58 mph on Friday evening at the Chicagoland track. That positioned the two-time Joliet winner in the provisional No. 14 position. Following a brief morning rain shower, Brown's Matco Tools/U.S. Army rail lost traction and coasted to a pass of 5.415 at 114.59 moving Brown to 17th in the 16-car field. As the third pair of cars to make a qualifying attempt in the final session, the former college track star used a tune-up from crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald to power the Matco-backed rail to a performance of 3.872 at 312.06 to move into the field. Brown, who earned the pole at the Joliet race last June, finished in the eighth in the order. He has now qualified in the top half of the field at eight of 10 races this season.
Brown's Matco Tools car is featuring a special one-race paint scheme recognizing the achievements of Matco's top distributor John Wolfe. Wolfe, from nearby Plainfield, Ill., has been the top Matco distributor for the last four years and is celebrating his 20th year as a Matco Tools distributor.
"We dodged a bullet with the weather today," Brown said. "We had a slip up last night, but this DSR Matco Tools team rebounded like true champions. We had her zipped up for the first run and it was just too aggressive. I was just praying for the rain to hold off and Mother Nature was kind to us today. We made a nice, smooth pass on that last run and got this Matco car in the show for my boy John Wolfe and all his customers today. That was important for us to put on a great show for John and all our Matco Tools distributors. We even got him some TV time on ESPN2."
Brown will face off against No. 9 qualifier T.J. Zizzo in the opening round of eliminations at 11 a.m. (CT) on Sunday at Route 66 Raceway. Brown is 0-1 in his only career race against Zizzo (Joliet 2008) and is looking for his 100th career Top Fuel round win.
