Wilson looking to defend All-Stars crown.
JOLIET, Ill. - One year ago, NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster driver Jeff Wilson beat 'the best of the best' to win the Federal Mogul Sportsman All-Star race. This weekend, Wilson and his Associated Builders & Contractors/Starcon team hope to pull a double win during the Craftsman 75th Anniversary Nationals presented by Racing Champions at Route 66 Raceway just outside of Chicago. Not only will Wilson be going for the main event title, but hopes to defend his crown during the Jegs Sportsman All-Stars race, which will be held on Saturday.
Wilson, from Winfield, Mo., enters the All-Stars event as the blocker, a provisional spot for the previous year's champion. Drivers in NHRA's seven geographical divisions earn points all year towards being their division's All-Star representative. Despite not winning his division's bid and having to take the champion's provisional spot, Wilson feels his ABC/Starcon team is ready to do battle with the best.
"We did a lot of R&D with this new Spitzer car this year," said Wilson. "What it may have cost us early on in going rounds, is starting to pay off now. We are really looking forward to going to a track where we can throw pretty much everything we have at it. With the All-Stars race and the regular race you could make as many as nine runs if you win both. Normally all we'll see is seven if we win a normal event. You really have to gear up for it. Hopefully, we'll be making nine runs this weekend."
Wilson also believes that the near ideal conditions forecasted for this weekend will produce a record setting field.
"I guarantee this will be the quickest field ever," stated Wilson. "The quickest field ever was a .52 bump in Indy, and the conditions were no where near what we will see this weekend. It will take a .30 just to get into the top half this weekend."
Qualifying begins on Friday for the alcohol cars. The Jegs Sportsman All-Star event will be held on Saturday, and final eliminations will conclude the event on Sunday.
