ENNIS, TX-Division 4 Federal Mogul Dragster pilot Jay Meyer kept his Division title hopes alive with his second straight divisional win at the Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series event at the famed Texas Motorplex this past weekend. The win was his second in as many races, coming fresh off of a win at the Division 4 opener in Baytown. Meyer qualified in the number two spot with a 5.473/ 256.71, behind Shelly Howard's 5.416/ 259.29 blast that took the top qualifying honors. "We just wanted to keep it consistent. We hurt a motor in Phoenix [Checker's-Schuck's-Kragen Nationals], so we only had one motor coming into this weekend. We were actually going to try to be conservative, but at the same time be aggressive. Just step up one step at a time, make one small move here and there, to make sure we didn't hurt this motor so we could win," said Meyer. Consistency was the key to Meyer's success as he used a string of mid .40's in eliminations to meet up with Division 6 [Northwest Division] strong runner Mark Hentges in the final. Meyer used yet another 5.47, a 5.478/ 257.28, with a great .420 light to hold off Hentges' right there 5.508/ 257.80. "We just stayed with our conservative/aggressive attack all day, did what the car wanted us to do, and did what the track would let us. We just took everything one baby step at a time. We tried to get the performance up, but it wouldn't go up for whatever reason. It just wanted to stay consistent, so we played consistency." Meyer leaves Ennis with a commanding points lead in the Division over second place Howard as she went out in the second round, and Baytown runner-up Troy Buff failed to qualify due to parts breakage in both of Saturday's qualifying sessions. With the win in Ennis, Meyer also took the national points lead from three time World Champ Rick Santos. "We are going to try to make as many races as we can money wise. It's what the money dictates. We are going to concentrate on winning the Division Championship, we really want to win that." If Meyer continues on the track he is on now, he will be on his way to his second Division 4 title. Meyer last won the division crown in 1986. Meyer's next race will be the third stop on the Division 4 tour at Memphis Motorsports Park in Memphis, Tennessee, March 24-26.
