Cannon looking to regain points lead in Valdosta
CECIL, Ga. - Defending NHRA Division 2 Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Jason Cannon will be looking to regain the Division 2 Points lead during this weekend's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at the brand-new Southern Georgia Motorsports Park just outside of Valdosta, Ga. Cannon and his Caps Coach & Trailer/InsideTopAlcohol.com backed team trails Guy Kelly by a mere 9 points after parts breakage sidelined him in Montgomery, Ala.
Cannon, from Middleburg, Fla., also has a more personal motivation to win this weekend. Just two weeks ago, Cannon's mother Janet passed away while the team was at a race in Atlanta, Ga. Cannon and his father Phil hope to win one for his mom this weekend.
"It's been a tough couple of weeks," said Cannon. "We would really love to go win one for her this weekend. Regardless of what happens, we know she will be smiling down on us."
"We want to get back on top of things in Division 2," Cannon continued. "We had a freak clutch problem take us out in Montgomery, but hopefully we won't see something like that again. We like racing in hot weather, and it's a pretty close race to home for us, so we're all looking forward to it."
Cannon's Crew Chief Will Hanna is looking forward to racing on the new Southern Georgia Motorsports Park surface, which features concrete to the 1/8 mile.
"We've heard a lot of good things about the place," said Hanna. "With the concrete going all the way to the eighth, it's going to be fast. It is going to be a little tricky since this is the first time they've had a full race of alcohol cars out there. But everyone is in the same boat. Hopefully we can run consistent low 5.40's this weekend."
Qualifying will be held Friday night for the alcohol cars with sessions at 7 and 9 p.m. Eliminations will be ran on Saturday evening starting at 6 p.m. Stay tuned to InsideTopAlcohol.com for the latest news in alcohol racing.
