TREBLE GOES TO SEMIS AFTER DEFEATING TEAMMATE ELLIS AT U.S. NATIONALS
CLERMONT, Ind. (Sept. 1, 2008) - Schumacher Electric Suzuki Pro Stock Motorcycle teammates Chip Ellis and Craig Treble were the first pair to square off in the opening round of Pro Stock Motorcycle eliminations today at the 54th annual U.S. Nationals. Treble had the jump at the starting line and held the lead to the finish stripe, taking the victory with an elapsed time of 7.018 seconds at 188.49 mph, his quickest run of the weekend. Ellis came in second with a 7.081/185.38 mph.
In his first race for Don Schumacher Racing, Treble went on to defeat No. 1 qualifier Matt Smith in the quarterfinals with a 7.142/183.84 to a 7.254/167.18, but even a spectacular .008-of-a-second reaction time (.000 is perfect) and a 7.171/182.53 pass in his semifinal race against Steve Johnson could hold off Johnson's winning 7.106/185.18.
CRAIG TREBLE, Schumacher Electric/Albrecht's Fast Track Suzuki Pro Stock Motorcycle: "It was a great day," said Treble, who clinched the No. 8 spot in the Countdown to 1 playoffs after he qualified No. 9. "Steve Tartaglia (crew chief) really had the Schumacher Electric/Albrecht's Fast Track Suzuki tuned up for the first round. It was unfortunate I had to race Chip, but he was in the other lane and I didn't like him for seven seconds. But we were still buddies at the end.
"I think Matt Smith had some problems in the second round. I had a little bit of an advantage on the starting line and he said his stuff blew up at the finish line. But we got the round win and that's all that really counted.
"The track was hot and greasy in the semifinals. The bike was skating around quite a bit and the left lane may have been the better lane of the two, but I'm happy for Steve Johnson (who won the event over Andrew Hines). He's been flying all weekend and he deserved to win.
"All and all, I was very happy with the bike and I thought I rode pretty good. It's awesome being a part of Don Schumacher Racing. I love it over here. This team does an incredible job and I'm hoping for big things to come out of this team. Hopefully Chip and I can combine our efforts and become the dynamic duo here at DSR."
CHIP ELLIS, Schumacher Electric/XXX Racing Fuels Suzuki Pro Stock Motorcycle: "It's tough to have to run your teammate in the first round," said Ellis, who will enter the Countdown to 1 playoffs No. 3 in the standings. "The good thing is that no matter what round you run him in you know one Schumacher Electric Suzuki is going on to the next round. Today was just Treble's day and it would have been nice if he had reached the final round, but he did a great job.
"Something definitely happened to our bike on that run. It slowed down a lot," added Ellis. "We're not sure what happened; we haven't looked at it yet. We'll get back to the DSR shop tomorrow and take it apart and look at it and see what happened and we'll be ready to go for Charlotte."
