TEAM HAMMONDS MAKES SOUND START AT NHRA US NATIONALS
(Indianapolis, Aug. 29, 2008) - Sitting in 21st place, Team Hammonds made a sound start today at the largest race of the season, NHRA MacTools US Nationals at O'Reilly Raceway Park, after returning from a seven event hiatus. The team ran an elapsed time of 6.784 seconds at 203.22 mph.
"We have not competed at an NHRA event for a number of races, and we tested two days prior to this race. Considering everything, we are pretty pleased with the run," said Hammonds, driver/owner of the race team.
The main objective for the team for the first run was for their No. 20 Chevy Cobalt to make it down the track without problems, in which it was a success. Overall, Hammonds feels there is room for improvement and will make the necessary changes to continue to be competitive for the two Saturday qualifying sessions.
"There is a lot of room for improvement, but the biggest thing for us was to get the data from this first session to be in a situation where we can tune for tomorrow morning, as well as the afternoon session."
"We will make changes for a faster session tomorrow morning, because I know we can run faster.
The team will make changes to their gear ratios and chassis. The weather is expected to be better tomorrow morning with them anticipating a faster session. As long as the set-up changes are a reflection of the data collected from today's session, they believe their No. 20 Chevy Cobalt should be able to qualify.
Richie Stevens, driver of the No. 9 GM GXP, is running a THE Engine, sits in 14th place of the qualifying field.
Pro Stock car competition gets started tomorrow at noon.
