Strong test has Lucas Oil's Langdon excited about Indy race
INDIANAPOLIS (August 31) -- Shawn Langdon is heading into the start of the NHRA's Countdown to the Championship and this weekend's 56th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil brimming with confidence.
The Lucas Oil/Speedco Top Fuel dragster team had a solid test at O'Reilly Raceway Park last week, and Langdon is itching to return to the track for the national event and show what his car can do.
"The test went awesome," Langdon said. "We made four good, consistent runs. We went 3.87 (seconds), 3.89. 3.89 and 3.86. The new management of ORP had the track in U.S. Nationals condition. It made it very easy for us not to question any of our results."
He said the car is still a tic off the top cars in the field, but he left the test with the car running exactly the way he wants it to for this weekend.
"How we wanted to run it at the nationals is how we ran it at the test," Langdon said. "We made four good runs. We still need to pick up a couple of hundredths out of that, but it's not the end of the world. At least we have a competitive car going into Indy."
Now that the Full Throttle Series points have been reshuffled for the Countdown, Langdon is in seventh place, just 80 points out of first.
Having a solid car is a huge lift for Langdon, because with the circus atmosphere around the U.S. Nationals it can be hard to block out the distractions.
"Indy is the biggest race of the year," Langdon said. "We're going to have a lot of the Lucas Oil family out at the track. There's a lot riding on this race.
"It's the first race of the Countdown, it's a big race for Lucas Oil. There's pressure to do well, but you can't let it affect your driving."
Langdon will be pulling double duty this weekend racing a Super Gas car as well as his Top Fuel dragster.
"I'm going to keep myself busy," Langdon said. "There's going to be a lot of autograph sessions and a fanfest too. We're going to be very busy, but it's also going to be a lot of fun."
