REICHERT, BOHL REMAIN TOP QUALIFIERS HEADING INTO ELIMINATIONS AT ORP'S LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES EVENT
INDIANAPOLIS -- The elimination fields are set at O'Reilly Raceway Park's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Owosso, Mich., racer Bill Reichert earned his fifth straight top qualifying spot in Top Alcohol Dragster while Andy Bolh of Racine, Wis., claimed the Top Alcohol Funny Car top spot for the first time this year.
Reichert's 5.332-second, 269.78 mph pass on Friday was enough to hold off the competition. Ken Perry, Gormley, Ont., did not better his opening day numbers, 5.372 seconds at 261.62 mph, but managed to hold on to the No. 2 qualifying position. Plymouth, Mich., resident Jeff Bohr did run better numbers today, 5.394 seconds at 268.28 mph, but it wasn't enough to move out of the No. 3 slot.
In today's initial Top Alcohol Funny Car qualifying session, Bohl did not improve on Friday's qualifying run and was unseated from the top spot by Chicago's Fred Hagen who ran 5.752 seconds at 253.42 mph. However, in the final qualifying round, Bohl laid down a 5.738-second, 251.86 mph pass to reclaim his spot. Reigning division champion Mick Snyder of Demotte, Ind., also improved in the final round to pass Hagen and move into the No. 2 qualifying spot.
Super Stock racer Kevin Murphy, Mt. Carmel, Ill., remained in the class's No. 1 qualifying spot as did Stock competitor James Harrison, Albion, Ill. In Comp Eliminator, Douglas Stewart, Edwardsburg, Mich., ousted Brian Browell, Lafayette, Ind., from the top qualifier spot and Top Sportsman racer Chris Ray, Louisville, Ky., took the No. 1 spot away from Terre Haute's Tom Stultz.
Racing continues Sunday at O'Reilly Raceway Park. Gates open at 7 a.m. and eliminations pick up at 8 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round at noon.
