FULLER CARDS FIRST-ROUND FINISH AT U.S. NATIONALS

CLERMONT, Ind. Sept. 1, 2008) -- Hot Rod Fuller and his David Powers-owned Caterpillar Top Fuel team made six consistent passes this weekend at the prestigious U.S. Nationals. The seven-time Top Fuel winner was on the short end of a close first-round battle on Sunday morning at O'Reilly Raceway Park. Fuller will enter the Countdown to 1 NHRA playoff system in the No. 5 position.

Fuller, whose dragster was flying the colors of MacAllister CAT during the 54th annual U.S. Nationals, qualified 13th with a qualifying-best elapsed time of 3.903-seconds. That matched him up with perennial title contender Brandon Bernstein and the Budweiser Top Fuel team for the third time this season. On Sunday morning, the popular racers used nearly identical reaction times and put on a great drag race. Fuller raced the MacAllister CAT dragster to a solid run of 3.945 seconds at 303.78, but it wasn't enough to overcome Bernstein's lap of 3.906 at 310.98. Of his six passes this weekend, five were in the 3.9-second range. Fuller is now 1-2 against Bernstein this season. The Caterpillar car, which won the St. Louis race in May, has a round record of 22-17 this season.

"Yeah, I'm disappointed, but our car is running really consistent, so it's hard to be too upset about that," Fuller said. "You always want to do well at Indy and we did run well. We made it down the track each pass. We're in the Countdown to 1 and our focus is to stay consistent and get a little quicker. The first 18 races are behind us. We're going to work hard to do well for Caterpillar and make a run at this championship."
