Commisso upsets No. 1 Pro Mod qualifier in Indy
INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 5) -- R2B2 Racing's Raymond Commisso rode a near-perfect light and an imperfect run to an upset victory over No. 1 qualifier Mike Janis during the first round of eliminations of the Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series contested at the 56th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals on Sunday.
Commisso advances to race Rickie Smith when eliminations continue on Monday afternoon.
The Canadian put his R2B2 Racing Firebird into the No. 16 spot in the elimination field on speed after Commisso and Dennis Radford ran identical 6.048 second passes during qualifying. It was Commisso's 240.72 mph top speed that put him in the field after Radford could only muster 232.47 mph out of his car.
In eliminations, Commisso got a huge jump on Janis, who had a best qualifying pass of 5.887 seconds at 244.16 mph, when Commisso cut a .003 second light to Janis' .055.
But the ride got a little rocky for Commisso from there.
"It was far from a clean run," he said. "It shook so hard in the top of first gear. It was bouncing me around with really bad tire shake."
The problem cleared up and Commisso crossed the line with a winning pass of 6.042 seconds at 241.84 mph. Janis, who has problems of his own, crossed the line in 6.118 seconds at 219.36 mph.
"Don't ask me how we got through the shake, but we did, got the win light and that's all that counts," Commisso said. "I want to bring home a win for Roger Burgess and the whole R2B2 Racing team."
Burgess had a frustrating day in his Camaro. He started off well, qualifying in the No. 3 spot, but in eliminations, he jumped the start by .182 seconds handing the win to his opponent Dave Pierce.
"The car was there -- the driver wasn't," Burgess said. "It stinks when you let the guys down."
