Herbert Qualifies Seventh at the 'Big Go'
Doug Herbert and the Snap-on team qualified their Top Fuel dragster in the No. 7 position at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, the 18th and final regular season event of the season.
Herbert, who qualified in the top-half of the field for the fourth event in a row, is satisfied with the car's performance this weekend. On Saturday the SnaponFranchise.com dragster made its fastest pass of the year since the Top Fuel class began running 1,000 feet instead of the traditional quarter-mile.
"Yesterday and today we went down the track when the conditions were less than optimal so we have a good race day car," said Herbert. We've run well all weekend for the conditions. On Saturday afternoon we were the only car to go down the left lane. We've got lane choice tomorrow and that can be important here at Indy."
For the first round of eliminations on Monday at O'Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis, Ind., Herbert is matched against No. 10 qualifier Clay Millican, who is competing in only his third race of the 2008 season.
"Indy is traditionally the biggest race of the year; it's the 'Big Go'," said Herbert. To win here at Indy would really mean something. I've come close twice. In 1992 and 1993 I went to the finals but got edged out. It's time to close the deal. I think we've got a team and a car that's capable of winning and I know we're going to give it all we've got."
