Del Worsham enters the Countdown to 1 NHRA Playoffs in ninth place in the NHRA Full Throttle Funny Car point standings. After the Countdown points reset, He trails eighth-place Ashley Force Hood by 10 points and leads 10th-place Tony Pedregon by 10 points.
Worsham has been a solid qualifier this year. In the season's first 17 races, he has qualified in the top five nine times; his average qualifying position is 5.94. At Brainerd, Minn., Worsham was the No. 11 qualifier and lost to Jack Beckman in the first round of eliminations.
Worsham won the U.S. Nationals in 2005. Last year, he was the No. 6 qualifier but lost to Tony Pedregon in the first round of eliminations.
Worsham is still seeking his first win of the season; he won three races last year visiting victory circle in Madison, Ill., Bristol, Tenn. and Richmond, Va.
Worsham has 25 wins in his Funny Car career; he is seventh on the NHRA's all-time Funny Car wins list trailing sixth place Cruz Pedregon by just one win.
Worsham prior to the U.S. Nationals:
"The U.S. Nationals is just a great race to win. I won it a few years ago, and I know how special it is to win this race. It pays the same amount of points as all the others, but this race is different. Winning the U.S. Nationals is special because of all the tradition and history that is a part of the event. Now, it's also the first race of the countdown so having a good result this weekend is even more important now.
"The Al-Anabi Toyota team starts the Countdown in ninth place, but the only disadvantage is that we're a half a round behind eighth place. That's what's so cool about this format. Once you get into the Countdown, anybody has a chance to win a Full Throttle championship. Last year, we all saw Robert Hight start as the 10th seed, wins some races and cruise to the championship so if things go our way, the Al-Anabi team can definitely win a Full Throttle championship from the ninth seed.
"My confidence level is higher than as it's been in all of 2010. We had a great test in Indy last week, and I can't wait to get back in the car on Friday. I don't want us to get ahead ourselves, but I feel very good about this Al-Anabi race team right now. Our test was positive, and if we can stay on the path we started on during the test, I am excited about the results I think we can achieve."
