ANTRON BROWN MAKES EARLY EXIT AT U.S. NATIONALS
CLERMONT, Ind. (Sept. 6, 2010) - Antron Brown suffered a rare opening-round loss Monday at the 56th running of the prestigious U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis. The two-time U.S. Nationals winner now ranks seventh in the NHRA Countdown to 1 standings.
A day after qualifying his Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster fifth for the second time this season (Seattle), the Matco Tools flagship driver was paired against young gun Shawn Langdon, a two-time NHRA Super Comp champion. Brown used a tune-up from crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald to power his Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster to a lap of 3.851 seconds at 316.75 mph, but Langdon's slight starting line advantage was enough to score the narrow win for the blue and white dragster. Langdon clocked a slower, but winning pass of 3.853 at 309.20 to advance to the quarterfinals. The Matco Tools team is now 26-18 in 44 rounds this season. It was Brown's fourth career holeshot loss against eight wins by holeshot.
"That was a tough loss," Brown said. "Two years in a row like that. We must just have some bad mojo here at ORP or something. I don't know how to explain it. We made a solid run and just came up short. We were on the wrong side of close drag race. We'll regroup and come out at Charlotte in a few weeks and try and bring it home at zMax (Dragway at Concord)."
The next NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event is the third annual O'Reilly Auto Parts Carolinas Nationals, Sept. 16-19, at zMax Dragway at Concord. Brown was the runner-up at the inaugural Charlotte race two years ago and posted a final-round finish at the Four-Wide Nationals at zMax Dragway in March. The fall Charlotte race is round 19 of 23 races on the 2010 NHRA schedule and race two of six in the Countdown to 1 playoff.
