TOP SEED HINES IN GOOD POSITION FOR REPEAT DASH VICTORY
CLERMONT, Ind. -- Top seed Matt Hines will try to punctuate his strong season with a second consecutive victory in The Wax Shop Pro Bike Dash, a special event for NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle competitors Aug. 30 during the U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The total purse for the seventh annual Dash is $36,000. The winner will earn $15,000, up from $12,000 in 1996. Any rider who can win the Dash and the U.S. Nationals on Sept. 1 will earn a $10,000 bonus from NHRA. The Dash runner-up will earn $5,000. The two semifinalists will earn $3,000 each, up from $2,500 in 1996. The four first-round finishers will earn $2,500 apiece, up from $2,000 in 1996. NHRA Winston points leader Hines, from Whittier, Calif., has dominated qualifying since riders began accumulating Dash points last September. He qualified No. 1 at seven of the 12 NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series national events containing Pro Stock Motorcycle competition since the 1996 Dash. The Wax Shop Pro Bike Dash showcases the eight best Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifiers since last year's Dash. Riders accumulated points at the 12 NHRA national events between last year's U.S. Nationals and this year's event, and a $1,000 bonus was awarded to the No. 1 qualifier at each race. Hines won the Dash last year as a rookie on the Vance & Hines Suzuki GSXR. He earned the title from the No. 7 spot in the eight-bike field. Defending NHRA Winston champion Dave Schultz is the No. 2 seed on the Sunoco Suzuki GSXR. Schultz has never won the Dash, finishing runner-up four times to archrival John Myers. Four-time Dash champion Myers is the fourth seed on the Close Call Phone Card Suzuki GSXR. His teammate, No. 3 seed Angelle Seeling, is the only rookie in this year's field. Seeling is the first woman to race in the Dash. The Wax Shop Pro Bike Dash rounds are scheduled for noon, 2 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. Aug. 30. 1997 THE WAX SHOP PRO BIKE DASH FINAL STANDINGS 1.
