A top speed Saturday tiebreaker costs Hammonds in Indy.

After starting off in fine fashion on Friday, Tom Hammonds and the Winnebago/GM Vehicle Care team looked to fine-tune their Cavalier in order to solidify their standing in Monday's final eliminations. With temperatures in the morning session precluding any improvement in the Pro Stock category, the team used the attempt as a tune-up for the evening run. After posting a competitive 6.93-second elapsed time, they decided to switch motors for the nighttime time trial in an attempt to maximize their effort,

However, at the conclusion of Saturday's activities, Hammonds' run of record remained his 6.871-second, 199.32 mph pass from Friday, which unfortunately found them just outside the top sixteen. Ironically, as both he and No. 16 qualifier Mark Pawuk had clocked 6.871-second passes, the decision as to who would remain in the show came down to a top speed tiebreaker, with Pawuk's 199.35 mph barely edging Hammonds' 199.32 mph, leaving the former NBA power forward looking towards one of his two attempts on Sunday to reclaim a spot in the field.

"I felt we could have made a better run than we did in the right lane tonight. Obviously, we're still missing something in the set-up. We're going to go to the hotel and get a good night's sleep and come back in the morning ready to make some good decisions and hopefully put our Winnebago/GM Vehicle Care Cavalier back in the top sixteen.

"It's a tough deal, with so many good cars trying to qualify, and you can't afford to give up anything, let alone a chance at a quick run in the good session. We definitely have our work cut out for us, so we'll go back, regroup and come out strong tomorrow."
