CLERMONT, Ind. - Current Winston points leader Gary Scelzi set the pace in Top Fuel during the second day of Raybestos U.S. Nationals Testing at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Jerry Toliver remained quickest among Funny Car competitors, while Ron Krisher, Randy Daniels and Steve Johnson were the unofficial leaders in their respective pro categories. Scelzi drove his Team Winston dragster to the quickest elapsed time of the two-day test, a 4.631-second effort at 309.81 mph. Melanie Troxel was close behind, making the first full pass in her new Exide Batteries dragster, a 4.684 at 317.01. Kenny Bernstein, the '91 Top Fuel winner here, posted his best run of the two-day test session late Wednesday, clocking a 4.740 at 313.26 in the Bud King dragster. Two-time U.S. Nationals winner Cory McClenathan failed to improve on his 4.704 from Tuesday. Toliver's 4.974 effort from Tuesday stood as the best overall, but John Force threatened the WWF Racing driver's position late Wednesday, covering the quarter-mile in 4.975 at 307.29 in his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang. Scotty Cannon was third quickest in his Oakley 'Mad Scientist' Camaro, posting a 4.994 at 306.01 late Tuesday. Ron Capps had perhaps the best run of the day going early on Wednesday, showing numbers that were better than Toliver's best-run incrementals, but the car shut off early and drifted to a 5.332 at 201.11. The two-time defending Budweiser Shootout winner later posted a 5.039 at 296.83 as his best for the day in the Don Prudhomme-owned U.S. Tobacco Camaro. Krisher drove his Eagle One Pontiac Firebird to the best Pro Stock pass, clocking a 6.972 at 196.80. Mark Pawuk is the only other driver to record a lap under six-seconds during the test session, posting a 6.993 at 195.68 in his Summit Racing Pontiac Firebird late Tuesday. Defending U.S. Nationals winner Warren Johnson improved Wednesday with a run of 7.011 at 197.88 in his GM Goodwrench Pontiac Firebird. Daniels drove his Bailey Trucking Chevy S-10 to a category best of 7.614 at 175.81. His elapsed time was better than the current track record of 7.623 seconds, held by Mark Osborne. John Lingenfelter recorded the next best time, a 7.641 at 176.02 in his Summit Racing GMC Sonoma. In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Steve Johnson rode his Suzuki to a 7.425 at 178.18, while Scott Cannon improved on his Oakley Suzuki, posting a 7.489 at 175.60. Testing is scheduled to continue Thursday.

NHRA teams are testing in preparation of the 46th annual U.S. Nationals, Aug. 30-Sept. 4. The $2.6 million race is the 17th of 23 events in the $45 million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series. Testing is scheduled to continue Thursday.
