CLERMONT - Shelly Parks It for U.S. Nationals

by Larry Sullivan CLERMONT, Ind. - SUMMIT FastNews - Shelley Anderson, driver of the Parts America/Texaco/Havoline Top Fuel dragster will sit out the fifth (final) noon qualifying session at the U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park this afternoon. Anderson, whose first four qualifying runs were plagued by mechanical problems, failed to qualify for tomorrow's final eliminations. "We were more than three-tenths of a second off of qualifying time, and we had junked three motors in four rounds, so we decided to park it. The heat on the track is only getting worse and those conditions make for difficult racing, even when your car is running the way it should," Anderson said. "Obviously I'm disappointed that we didn't do better. Indy is the biggest race of the year and I worked hard to get here. Nevertheless, I am glad to be back and racing. They say the first race back is always the hardest and now it's behind me, and I'm looking forward to Reading." This was Anderson's first race back after her fiery crash at the Autolite Nationals in Sonoma, Calif., on July 24, in which she received second- and third-degree burns to both ankles and her left hand and arm. In the weeks following the crash, she underwent a series of painful skin grafts and gruelling physical therapy.
