INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 7, 1998) -- Paul Romine's day at the 44th annual NHRA U.S. Nationals abruptly ended Monday as he smoked the tires against Larry Dixon, who ran 4.602 /317.23.

"There wasn't much in stopping Dixon," Romine said. "We stepped on it and it smoked the tires, but that's all right, we'll be back at the next event. I'm proud of the guys because it's an accomplishment just having the opportunity to race at Indy."

Romine and the CARQUEST team will be back at the next NHRA event, Sept. 17-20, the Pioneer Keystone Nationals in Reading, Pa. Next weekend, Romine, the defending IHRA Top Fuel Champion, will try to keep his 1998 IHRA points lead, competing at the IHRA North American Nationals in Epping, New Hampshire.
