INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 4, 1998) -- The CARQUEST Top Fuel dragster with Paul Romine was a bit too aggressive Friday night at the 44th annual NHRA U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park. At the hit of the throttle, the CARQUEST dragster went up in smoke, costing to a 13.111/85.83 clocking.

"It was a tricky track out there tonight," Romine said. "After the sun set, the track cooled and it was a hit or miss call getting the car to the other end. Only 6 cars got a hold of the track and we were one of the 17 who just didn't get it done, but we've got four more shots tomorrow and Sunday so I'm not concerned."

Cory McClenathan earned the top spot with a 4.614/315.56 while Cristen Powell grabbed the bump with a 11.560/76.04.

Qualifying for the NHRA U.S. Nationals continues Saturday with two sessions scheduled at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. (EST).
