Tom Martino opened his pursuit of a U.S. Nationals victory with a solid effort in Friday's lone qualifying session. Running in the right lane, Martino recorded an elapsed time of 7.039 seconds with a top speed of 195.36 mph, which placed the CENTURY 21 Firebird 9th halfway through qualifying. Martino and crew saw their performance as a good starting point from which they could fine-tune and, hopefully, improve. "For the biggest Friday night session of the year, we decided to change the rear-end housing and four-link, with each never having been in the car before. It was a gamble, but we were lucky and hit it fairly close. It was a pretty decent pass. We might have been able to go a little faster, but I'll definitely take tonight's run.

"From here on, we're going to keep going after our CENTURY 21 Firebird on every run. We'll make some changes for tomorrow, trying to tune around the set-up we have in it. We'll judge our performance by how we do relative to our competition. For example, we were ninth quickest tonight, tomorrow morning we'll try to be seventh quick, and then fifth in the session after that. That way, if the weather improves, we can hopefully make a better run and move up some. I'd like to get into the top half and have lane choice for the first round on Monday. But we're definitely happy with the start to our weekend in Indy."
