Whisnant exits in Round 2

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance Chevrolet Cavalier, entered the 48th Annual Mac Tools US Nationals holding the second position on the Pro Stock eliminations ladder.

It was in the third session of qualifying that Whisnant drove his Cavalier to a 6.824 / 201.13 mph to secure his second place birth.

In the first round, Whisnant was paired against the number 15 qualifier Thomas Lee.

When the lights went green, Whisnant took the advantage on the starting line with a .429 of a second light, and held his advantage all the way to the finish line to take the victory. Whisnant ran a 6.914 / 199.35 mph to defeat Lee with a 6.969 / 198.32 mph.

In Round 2 Whisnant was paired against Jim Yates. After a short session of staging games, Whisnant handed the win to Yates when he red lit. Yates ran a 6.913 / 199.94 mph to Whisnant's 8.571 / 104.24 mph.

"I would be lying if I said that I am not disappointed," said Whisnant. "Know one likes to loose, but when you do it to yourself, that hurts even worse.

"But really, just being able to race at the US Nationals is a great accomplishment. There were 43 cars trying to get into the show here this weekend. Being one of the 16 that started here this morning is an honor.

"I would have liked to have gone a little farther today, but this is my rookie year, and we will be back next year. Hopefully, next year we will be able to go all the way to the final round."

The next race on the 2002 POWERade Drag Racing series will be the 18th Annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals on Sept. 12-15 in Reading, Pa.
