CLERMONT, IND. (AUG. 31) -- For the first time in 49 years the U.S. Nationals has been postponed. The 49th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park has been rescheduled for next weekend (Sept.5-7th).
A dismal weekend forecast leading into the week forced NHRA officials to call the race after just two rounds of qualifying and before the Funny Car $100,000 Shoot Out.
Defending POWERade NHRA champion Larry Dixon qualified No.2 after two of five qualifying passes. After a rained out Friday qualifying session the Miller Lite/Snake Racing dragster was finally able to pull into the staging lanes at IRP and make two successful passes on Saturday.
Dixon's last pass was the second best of the weekend with a time of 4.537-seconds at 319.29 mph. The first time down the IRP track, the Miller Lite dragster made a pass of 4.655 seconds at 315.86 mph. The winner of eight NHRA National events out of 16 final rounds in 2003, Dixon would like to add another U.S. Nationals title to his record (1995 and 2001).
Fortunately Dixon and the Miller Lite team will go home instead of a hotel, spending the following week at their shop in nearby Brownsburg, Indiana.
Although it's home sweet home now, the team has a tough road ahead. "Now it's five races in a row," said crew chief Dick LaHaie. "We've been here this week, will be here next week, directly to Reading, then to Memphis and finally to Chicago. If there's any rain between any of those races then it could possibly be six in a row."
"When weather like this rolls in, it makes a mess out of everything. I feel terrible for the spectators that spent money and for those that come to this race as their vacation."
Racing will resume on Friday, Sept. 5th with one round of qualifying at 6:00 PM. The Funny Car Shoot Out will run on Saturday along with two final rounds of top fuel qualifying at 12:45 and 4:10 PM (ET). Sunday final elimination is scheduled for an 11:00 AM start.
