Indianapolis, Ind. (Pre-race) - This weekend, Larry Kopp, driver of the Speedco Truck Lubes Chevrolet S-10, will arrive in Indianapolis for the running of the 46th Annual NHRA US Nationals. Kopp will be looking for his second victory at the most prestigious event on the NHRA Drag Racing circuit: the US Nationals.
Kopp had his first Pro Stock Truck victory at the US Nationals in 1998, the same year that he was crowned the Winston Pro Stock Truck Champion.
"Winning Indy is like winning the Daytona 500," said Kopp, "there is nothing else that compares to it. If you are going to win one, that is the one you want to win.
"The US Nationals is the biggest race of the year, not just for the history behind it, but for the amount of competitors coming here to race. The field will be the biggest we will see all year, so you need to be prepared when you get here.
"During the break we have made a lot of changes to our racing program. I have a new crew chief starting at this race. Eric Luzinski takes over at this race as my crew chief. He has lots of experience with these trucks, and I feel like he will make a good addition to our team.
"Also in Indy, Arnie Martel will join us as the second Speedco truck. We will race together as a team in Indy, and hopefully for the remainder of the season. Arnie is a good racer and I feel like teaming up with him will only help both of us to be better.
"Like everybody else we did a lot of work during our time off. We have gone completely through the truck. Sent back our engines to be freshened, and have been at the track testing. We made several laps in Indy last week, and are happy with the results we have seen. Now we just want to get to Indy and race.
"This weekend in Indy I would like to see us run decent right off the trailer. We would like to take advantage of the early qualifying rounds. I think the track will be at it best then. If we can get in early then we can use the later rounds to fine tune our set-up.
"I feel like we have a very good chance of qualifying. Once we get in then we will race one round at a time. I think our chances in Indy are as good as anyone else. I just want to get there and get racing. And with a little luck, maybe we will see the wins circle again this year."
The first round of qualifying at the 46th Annual NHRA US Nationals begins on Friday Sept. 1. Qualifying then continues Saturday Sept. 2 and Sunday Sept. 3. Eliminations begin at 11:00 AM EST on Monday Sept. 4.
