National Hot Rod Association: Goodyear cars won nine of the 12 classes they competed in at the 47th Annual Mac Tools NHRA US Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park in Indianapolis, Ind. The nine victories represent the largest win total by any tiremaker in an NHRA event this season.

Larry Dixon won the Top Fuel crown, beating Mike Dunn in the finals. Dunn set a track record with a 327.82 mph run during qualifying. Kenny Bernstein set a track record for elapsed time with a 4.505-second pass.

Whit Bazemore took the Funny Car title after Frank Pedregon won the Bud Shootout a day earlier. Bazemore recorded the quickest and fastest Funny Car lap ever with he posted a 4.756-second, 325.69 mph lap in qualifying. Bazemore was unable to back the time up and the time and speed are not official records.

Greg Anderson won in Pro Stock to lead other Goodyear winners and Mike Coughlin captured the Pro Stock Truck title. Ronnie Hood won the Pro Modified crown, Keith Stark won in Federal Mogul Dragster, the Super Gas title went to Larry Edmoundson, Santo Volpe won in Competition Eliminator and Peter Biondo was the winner in Super Stock.

NHRA icons Don `Big Daddy' Garlitz and Shirley Muldowney returned to drag racing's big show and both made the field before losing in the first round of eliminations. Garlitz recorded the first 300-mph pass of his career in qualifying.
