Kalitta eager to go big in Indy at 48th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals.
Indianapolis, Ind., Aug. 26, 2002 - Often in sports an athlete defines his career by his achievements. More often than not, that definition includes his performance in his sport's most hallowed event. Whether win or lose, he remembers how well he played in the "big game". In the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals is the "big go" of drag racing, enticing fans and competitors from around the world to Indianapolis Raceway Park, Aug. 28-Sept. 2.
Doug Kalitta and the Mac Tools/Kalitta Motorsports Top Fuel dragster team hope that on Sept. 2 they can introduce themselves as Mac Tools U.S. Nationals Champions and always reflect on 2002 as the year they won Indy.
"We are going into Indy with a great deal of momentum," said Kalitta. "Based on our performance at the last two races in Sonoma and Brainerd, we like our chances going into the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals."
"Connie (Kalitta, crew chief) and Jim (Oberhofer, co-crew chief) have our Mac Tools dragster running really well. Our team is more confident that we can win Indy than I have ever seen. The Mac Tools/Kalitta Motorsports team has been working overtime to prepare our hot rod for the biggest race of the season. Winning Indy is the best prize I can think of to reward their dedication."
"The pressure on us will be high at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals because there will be so many Mac Tools distributors, district managers and corporate staff in attendance. With all the adversity that our Mac Tools team has been through this year, I am sure we will be up to the challenge of performing well for them."
Team Kalitta has posted a runner-up finish and made a semi-final round appearance in the last two events. They know a win will come soon and what better setting could there be than the world's most prestigious drag race.
Oberhofer said, "John Aden, President of Mac Tools, told us in Seattle that he could feel the momentum in our team and it would all come together with a win in Indy. Boy, I hope he is right. We haven't had a very good season, but recently things have been coming around. We hope to give John and all the great Mac Tools folks something to be proud of on Labor Day."
"Everyone on our Mac Tools team has done an outstanding job this year. We have just had difficulty capitalizing on other team's mistakes. We are done beating ourselves. We know our racecar can run with anyone out there, and we are ready to prove that on race day."
"Doug has been doing a great job of driving. I am very proud of the way our Mac Tools team hasn't let anything affect their focus of winning races. We have seven races left to prove how good we are. We put pressure on ourselves to win. We are going to turn that pressure into motivation and let our hot rod do the talking by winning Indy and hopefully the other six."
