NHRA OFFERS 'DOUBLE-UP' BONUSES AT U.S. NATIONALS

CLERMONT, Ind. - The National Hot Rod Association will award bonuses to a Funny Car driver and a Pro Stock Motorcycle rider who wins the U.S. Nationals and their respective special event at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The bonus helps make the U.S. Nationals the richest event of the season in both categories. A Funny Car driver will earn a $50,000 bonus for winning the U.S. Nationals title Sept. 6 and the Big Bud Shootout special event Sept. 5. A Pro Stock Motorcycle rider will earn a $10,000 bonus for winning the U.S. Nationals and the Holley Pro Stock Dominator Duel special event Sept. 4.

A Funny Car driver can earn about $235,000 at the historic event. The winner of the U.S. Nationals will earn approximately $85,000, and the Big Bud Shootout winner will receive $100,000.

A Pro Stock Motorcycle rider can earn $35,000. The winner of the U.S. Nationals will earn nearly $10,000, and the Holley Pro Stock Dominator Duel will receive $15,000.

The 1999 Big Bud Shootout will feature eight NHRA Funny Car drivers who have accumulated the most points during qualifying at the 21 events preceding the Shootout. The 1999 Holley Pro Stock Dominator Duel will feature the eight NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle riders who have amassed the most points during qualifying at the 13 bike events before the Holley Pro Stock Dominator Duel.

Four Funny Car drivers have swept the Big Bud Shootout and the U.S. Nationals. John Force (1993 and 1996), Jim White (1991), Don Prudhomme (1989) and Kenny Bernstein (1983).

Matt Hines claimed the Holley Pro Stock Dominator Duel and the U.S. Nationals victory in 1998, and Jim Bernard accomplished the feat in 1991.
