INDIANAPOLIS - It could be said that David Wells is the world's fastest ice cream truck driver. But, this is no truck, rather a 3000 HP, 260 mph Federal Mogul Dragster with the Blue Bunny Ice Cream moniker on it. Traditionally, Indianapolis 500 winners drink a bottle of milk in the winner's circle, but at this weekend's Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at the famed Indianapolis Raceway Park, the biggest event in drag racing, Wells and the "Plain Vanilla" team plan on making cold Blue Bunny Ice Cream the entree' of choice in this weekend's winner's circle.
Wells, who helps run the family's ice cream plant in LeMars, Iowa, comes into this weekend's event hungry for his first national event victory this year. Despite picking up three wins and a runner-up on the divisional level, Wells only has one semifinal finish in five national showings this year. That semifinal finish was at his last race in Brainerd, Minn., where clutch problems kept him from the win. This weekend, he hopes to eliminate those clutch problems to better his chances of victory.
"We thought we had it [the clutch] fixed up in Brainerd," said Wells. "For three runs it seemed to work pretty good, then the next run, it just did something stupid, so we're not real sure what to do with it. We'll just keep working with it, and see what happens.
With close to 40 cars pre-entered in Federal Mogul Dragster, this weekend's event has the potential to be one of the tightest fields ever. Wells plans not to get caught up in the hype, but 'stick to his guns' to speak and run his own race.
"We're pretty much going to stick with the normal game plan," stated Wells. "The track will probably be better than where we've been at. We normally tune the car up to run as good as we can for the track we are running on, so it just depends on whatever the track will hold for what we are tuning for."
Qualifying begins on Thursday for the Federal Mogul Dragsters.
