CLERMONT, Ind. - Former NHRA Division 5 Federal Mogul Dragster Champion David Wells currently sits in the ninth qualifying spot after two days of qualifying of this weekend's Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Wells, from LeMars, Iowa, improved slightly today with an elapsed time of 5.605 seconds at 253.18 mph in his Blue Bunny Ice Cream/ "Plain Vanilla" Blown Alcohol Dragster.

"We found a piece of metal in one of the lean out jets as we were getting ready to run," said Wells. "That made us afraid to lean it out because we had thought the piece of metal was in there the run before and had blocked it off. We played it cautious, and apparently the metal was only in the jet at the tail end of the run. That's why the thing was a little softer than we actually wanted."

With one qualifying session remaining, Wells hopes to put his dragster into the low .40's with the assistance of veteran tuner Tom Conway, who won this event in 1989.

"We'll step on it a little bit harder tomorrow and see what happens," commented Wells. "It should run middle .40's. We might be able to run a low .40 if we hit right on it. It depends on what the weather does. We should step right up real quick."

Qualifying resumes tomorrow with one final session. Stay tuned to InsideFMRacing.com for the latest news from Indy.
