Dave Connolly Advances to Quarterfinals at Indy
A good performance by Dave Connolly in the 51st Mac Tools U.S. Nationals turned the frowns upside down on the SKULL GEAR Chevrolet Cobalt Pro Stock team Monday at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
After qualifying ninth -- his first single-digit starting position in four races -- Connolly notched a hole-shot victory over V. Gaines in the opening round and then gave No. 1 qualifier Greg Anderson a battle to the finish line before falling short by a car-length.
"We're happy," said crew chief Terry Adams. "This is definitely better than the last two races (No. 15 qualifying and first-round loss to Anderson at Brainerd, Minn., and not qualifying at Memphis). We'll be able to carry this momentum into Reading (Pa., site of the Toyo Tires Nationals, Sept. 16-18).
"We were just on the wrong side of the ladder here."
Had Connolly qualified seventh or 10th he would've avoided meeting the No. 1 qualifier in the quarterfinals.
The Elyria, Ohio-based driver had two of the quickest times in Sunday's final qualifying but didn't have lane choice in either round Monday. Connolly's 6.748-second, 204.34-mph run was the quickest in the right lane in the first two rounds.
His near-perfect .008-second reaction time against Gaines helped turn on the win light. Gaines was timed in 6.743 seconds at 204.42 mph.
Anderson won with a 6.715 at 205.26 to Connolly's 6.762 at 203.83 and went on to win the event.
"We had the quickest time in the bad lane on both our runs and we are making progress," said Connolly, who remained fifth with 1115 points. "We made big strides here and we're looking forward to going to Reading."
