Millican Eighth Heading into Monday's Eliminations at NHRA U.S. Nationals
Indianapolis - September 5, 2004 Clay Millican of Team 104+ Performance Additives/Lehman Racing qualified in the number eight position in the team's special Elvis Presley-themed dragster for Monday's finals at the 50th annual NHRA U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
"Our team is confident going into tomorrow's eliminations," said Millican. "We have been consistent all weekend and it has been awesome racing in Indy. I hope we can get our first NHRA win tomorrow."
Millican's best elapsed time of the weekend came in the final round of qualifying, where he made a pass in 4.618 seconds at 309.98 mph. He will face number nine qualifier David Grubnic in the first round of eliminations, which are set to begin at 11:00 a.m. CT. Millican has a career won/loss record of 4-1 against Grubnic, and beat him in the quarterfinals at the pair's last NHRA event, the O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals in Memphis.
Earlier this season, Millican and Team 104+ Performance Additives advanced to three straight NHRA final rounds at the national events in Houston, Bristol, and Atlanta. He holds the number 14 spot in the NHRA Top Fuel points standings after racing in just seven of 17 national events that have taken place this season. In addition to his NHRA schedule, Millican and Team Werner are going for a fourth straight IHRA Top Fuel Championship.
Millican, a native of Drummonds, Tenn., unveiled the Elvis dragster that the team is racing in Indianapolis by performing a burnout down Elvis Presley Boulevard in Memphis on August 9. This marked the first time in 17 years that a legal Top Fuel burnout was performed on a city street in the U.S.
