Millican Advances to Quarterfinals at 50th Annual NHRA U.S. Nationals
Indianapolis - September 6, 2004 Clay Millican of Team 104+ Performance Additives/Lehman Racing, the number eight Top Fuel qualifier, advanced his team's special Elvis-themed dragster to the quarterfinal round of eliminations at the 50th annual NHRA U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
"Mike Kloeber and this 104+ Performance Additives crew were impressive all weekend. We were so consistent and got down the track every single time," said Millican.
In the first round, Millican faced number nine qualifier David Grubnic. Millican went into the race with a 4-1 career won/loss advantage over Grubnic. He brought that to 5-1 with a tire-smoking win in 5.039 seconds at 279.38 mph to Grubnic's 6.537 at 119.13 mph. The pair also met at their last race, the NHRA O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals, where Millican came out on top with the Motel 6 "Who Got the Light" award, winning with a .0006 second margin of victory on a holeshot.
In the second round of eliminations, Millican faced Grubnic's teammate, Doug Kalitta. Millican got off the line first with a reaction time of .029 seconds to Kalitta's .089, and the two were very close the entire pass. Kalitta came out ahead, however, with an E.T. of 4.658 to Millican's 4.738 at 299.86 mph.
"It was a good race until about 1,000 feet," said Millican. "We just didn't get the job done."
Millican, a three-time IHRA Top Fuel Champion, will race in at least two more NHRA national events this season with Team 104+ Performance Additives. He has advanced to three final rounds this season at the NHRA events in Houston, Bristol, and Atlanta, and hopes to get his first-ever NHRA Top Fuel victory at one of the remaining races this season.
"My momma always tells me that things happen when they are supposed to, so I believe that when the time is right we will get our first NHRA win," said Millican.
Along with his NHRA schedule, Millican is currently going for a fourth consecutive Top Fuel Championship in the IHRA with Team Werner. Their next race will be the IHRA North American Nationals in Epping, N.H. on September 10-12. Millican will return to NHRA action at the Carquest Auto Parts Nationals in Joliet, Ill. on October 1-3.
