INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 31, 2003 -- A steady rain, with more expected Monday, forced NHRA to postpone completion of the 49th annual U.S. Nationals until Sept. 5-7 at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Just two of a scheduled five qualifying runs were completed after rain cancelled Friday night's first attempt.

Ron Capps and Tommy Johnson Jr., teammates on Don "The Snake" Prudhomme's Skoal Racing Funny Car team, were fifth and sixth, respectively, after the two runs and assured of positions in the 16-car field.

The new schedule -- beginning with one qualifying session Friday evening -- gives each driver another run before Saturday's Budweiser Shootout. That special event also includes the final two U.S. Nationals qualifying sessions. The race will be run on Sunday.

The Shootout, featuring the top eight qualifiers from the past year, pays $100,000 to the winner. Capps, driver of the Green Camaro, is the defending champion and has won three of five in which he's competed. Johnson, driving the Blue Camaro, will be making his first Shootout appearance.
