Team JEG'S Looks To Continue Winning Tradition In Houston
Houston Raceway Park has certainly smiled on the JEG'S Mail Order Racing Team in the recent years, especially during the Matco Tools SuperNationals. In 1997 Jeg Coughlin, Jr. won the inaugural Matco Tools SuperNationals in only his second race behind the wheel of a Pro Stock car, this was his first professional victory. His win made him the first driver in NHRA history to win national events in four separate competition classes (Super Stock, Competition Eliminator, Super Gas & Pro Stock) in the same season.
In 1998 Jeg returned to the Matco Tools SuperNationals as the defending champion. The '98 NHRA "Rookie of the Year" walked away with another win at the 2nd Annual Matco Tools SuperNationals. Jeg will once again come to Houston Raceway Park to defend his title for the second time in the two year history of the race.
Jeg explained, "It feels great coming to a race where we have had so much success, you really have a feeling of confidence before you even get to the track. Our team has a lot of raceday data on this track. Our combination that we have used in the past seems to thrive here, which we will use to our advantage." Coughlin is in the number three position in the NHRA Winston Championship points and trails Kurt Johnson by 94 points.
Coughlin continued, "Our team knows that we have to eliminate our mistakes to walk away with another win here. We are ready to make a charge for the number two spot and we know what we have to do as a team." Jeg has won four NHRA National Events so far this season, only one driver in the class has won more events during the '99 season.
Troy Coughlin has been to five final rounds this season in Pro Stock and would like to add to the Coughlin tradition of winning the Matco Tools SuperNationals. Troy's efforts last weekend at the NHRA O'Reilly Fall Nationals moved him into the number seven spot in the NHRA Winston Championship points. Coughlin trails Mike Edwards by 47 points in a battle for the number six position.
Troy commented, "I'm looking forward to coming to Houston. This is a race that our team has done well at and I would like nothing more than to add to our teams tradition of winning and leave Sunday night with my first Pro Stock victory."
