BAYTOWN, Texas - Federal Mogul Dragster driver Shelly Howard is hoping to get a "fresh start" during this weekend's Division 4 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series opener at Houston Raceway Park. Howard won this event in 1999, and hopes to return to the winner circle here in 2001.

The Tulsa, Okla., registered nurse finished off the 2000 season with a string of semifinal finishes, dipping down into the 5.40's on several occasions at over 260 mph. With two-time World Champion and eight time Division 4 Champion Tom Conway back on board as tuning consultant, Howard looks to be in the Division 4 Championship hunt once again in 2001.

"We have the same gameplan we had last year," said Howard. "Hopefully I can perform well, and the car can perform well. It's a new season, and we hope to get a good start to the new year in Houston."

With her past successes at HRP, Howard feels that 5.40's are not out of the question this weekend.

"We usually run well at Houston," stated Howard. "We should be able to run at least in the 5.50's, and if the weather is good enough, maybe into the 5.40's. If we get back into the .40's, I'll be real happy with that."

After finishing No. 3 in Division 4 for the second straight year, Howard hopes a strong showing in Houston will help her get a run on the 2001 Division 4 Championship.

"I try to look at every race as a fresh start," Howard said. "Of course, starting up a new season, you need to be looking for a fresh start. I always try not to look back too much at the last race, but to concentrate on the race at hand."

Qualifying begins on Friday at 4 p.m. for the Federal Mogul Dragsters. www.ShellyHoward.com
