Stevens' quick light results in win HOUSTON (April 11) - Richie "The Kid" Stevens, the driver of the Valspar Refinish Pro Stock Pontiac Firebird, had a feeling that his car was a tick slower than the machine of rival George Marnell. So as the two prepared for Sunday's opening round elimination match at the 12th AnnualO'Reilly Nationals presented by Pennzoil Stevens devised a simple plan of.

"I knew I had to leave him at the starting line in order to win," Stevens said. "I did the best I could and everything worked out." The best Stevens could do was a near-perfect 0.427-second start, which buried Marnell at the tree when he took 0.503 seconds to react to the green light. At the other end of the track Stevens took the win with a 7.018-second, 195.87-mph lap compared to Marnell's 6.981-second pass at 197.80 mph. "I was sweating it," Stevens said. "I knew I left before him but at about the 330-foot mark the car started sliding all over the place and I was basically holding on and wishing the finish line would hurry up and get there. I didn't see him, then I checked again and I still didn't see him and then I saw that little win light came on and I knew I had won.

"No matter how many times that happens it's always a great feeling when
the win light comes on. Hopefully I'll see it three more times today."
Stevens will face Mike Edwards in the quarterfinal round. Edwards
advanced past the first round with a 6.976-second, 197.74-mph win over
Ron Krisher. Due to his superior elapsed time, Edwards will have the
advantage of lane choice over Stevens.
