Valspar car makes big Round 2 move

HOUSTON (April 9) -- The professional drivers of the National Hot Rod Association spent Friday evening jockeying for position as qualifying for the 12th Annual O'Reilly Nationals presented by Pennzoil continued at Houston Raceway Park.

One of the biggest movers and shakers of the evening session was Richie "The Kid" Stevens, the driver of the Valspar Refinish Pro Stock Pontiac Firebird, who improved on his previously posted time by a full three hundredths of a second. Stevens' official Round 2 time was 6.983 seconds at 197.16 mph. The improved mark moved the New Orleans native from 15th to 11th place in the Pro Stock standings with two rounds of qualifying left to be run.

"We actually could have gone a lot faster then we did," Stevens said. "But we carried the front end a lot further down then we normally do and by the time it set it down we had drifted out of the groove a little and we started to spin the tires. That's a real testament to the track. The car hooked up even better than we thought it would and that's why we carried the front end for so long.

"We are all very happy with how the car is running. By the time we get out there tomorrow morning we should be going great. The track will continue to get better and if the weather cools down just a little bit, we'll be fast.

"I credit my Valspar Refinish crew for doing such a good job adjusting to the conditions. Everyone is working really hard at getting our first win of the season. I've got a bunch of family and friends here so I'd love to come out on top at this race. We are definitely heading in the right direction."
