TOP FUEL *Joe Amato set an NHRA speed national record of 317.57 mph in the Keystone Automotive Warehouse Dragster. Amato, from Old Forge, Pa., broke the record of 316.90 set by Shelly Anderson at the Chief Auto Parts Winternationals in February 1997 at Pomona, Calif.
FUNNY CAR *Whit Bazemore set an NHRA speed national record of 313.04 mph in the Team Winston Ford Mustang. Bazemore, from Indianapolis, broke the record of 311.20 set by Cruz Pedregon at the Western Auto Nationals presented by Slick 50 in July 1996 at Topeka, Kan.
*The race between Tony Pedregon and Cruz Pedregon was the first professional final round between brothers in NHRA history. Tony leads his older brother, 4-3, in their career matchups during eliminations.
*Six-time NHRA Winston champion John Force signed a multiyear agreement with Ford and debuted his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang. Force had raced Pontiac Firebirds from the start of the 1995 season until the Mac Tools Gatornationals earlier this month, when Pontiac ended its association with Force.
*Whit Bazemore became the eighth member of the Castrol 4-Second Club for Funny Cars with a time of 4.994 seconds in the Team Winston Ford Mustang. Bazemore earned $1,000 from Castrol.
*Jeff Arend substituted for the injured Al Hofmann in the Hofmann Racing Pontiac Firebird. Hofmann suffered a broken right arm and an injured left hand in a crash after winning the Mac Tools Gatornationals. He said he plans to return to racing at the Winston Invitational, April 4-6 at Rockingham, N.C.
