BAYTOWN, Tex. (April 14, 2000) - Qualifying for the 13th annual O'Reilly Nationals got underway today at Houston Raceway Park. In Pro Stock, Jim Yates is the No. 1 qualifier in the Splitfire/Peak Pontiac Firebird with an elapsed time of 6.888 seconds at 199.58 mph. Jeg Coughlin is qualified second in an Oldsmobile, Rickie Smith is third in a Camaro, Richie Stevens is fourth in the Valspar Refinish Pontiac Firebird and Mark Pawuk is fifth in the Summit Racing Pontiac Firebird. Bruce Allen is qualified ninth, Tom Martino is 10th, Ron Krisher is 12th, Brad Jeter is 13th, Mike Thomas is 14th, Warren Johnson is 15th and Jamie Yates is 22nd.
In Funny Car, Al Hofmann is the top qualified Firebird in the No. 5 position. The Mooneyes/Red Line Oil Pontiac eclipsed the quarter mile in 4.918 seconds at 299.73 mph. The No. 1 qualifier is John Force in a Mustang with an elapsed time of 4.839 seconds at 319.98 mph. Jerry Toliver is the No. 2 qualifier in a Camaro, Whit Bazemore is third in a Camaro and Dean Skuza is fourth in an Avenger. Gary Densham is qualified eighth, Todd Paton is ninth, Tim Wilkerson is 13th, Del Worsham is 16th, Frank Pedregon is 18th, Cristen Powell is 20th and Bruce Sarver is 21st.
In Top Fuel, Team Pontiac driver Cory McClenathan is the No. 7 qualifier in the MBNA dragster with an elapsed time of 4.680 seconds at 293.22 mph. The No. 1 qualifier is Kenny Bernstein with an elapsed time of 4.566 seconds at 318.17 mph. Gary Scelzi is qualified second, Larry Dixon is third, Joe Amato is fourth and Tony Schumacher is fifth.
