BAYTOWN, Tex- Perennial Division 5 Federal Mogul Dragster powerhouse David Wells fell to Houston area racer Troy Buff in the semifinals of the O'Reilly Nationals presented by Pennzoil this weekend at Houston Raceway Park. Wells gained a slight starting line advantage, but went into severe tireshake, slowing his Plain Vanilla/ Blue Bunny entry to a 5.588/255.15 that was not enough to hold off a hard charging Buff who ran 5.540/256.70

Wells qualified sixth with a 5.546/258.67, and defeated Bill Ancona and Greg Roberts on his way to the semifinals. His first round matchup with Ancona was a close call, when Wells' dragster went into heavy tireshake, got out of shape and took out the 660' cone. Luckily for Wells, Ancona was disqualified at the starting line due to a fuel leak, giving Wells a bye-run.

Wells' tireshake problems eventually caught up with him in the semifinals against Buff. "The car started shaking real hard at the top of low, then when I punched second, it shook me off into the 'marbles', and I got a little out of shape. Buff came around me at that point, and stayed ahead the rest of the run," said Wells.

The next stop for the Plain Vanilla team will be at the Division 5 opener at Heartland Park in Topeka, Ks, May 5-7, where he will be looking to defend his Division 5 crown.

"We are just going to try to get this thing sorted out. We need to get some of this new power we have found under control, and get the shake out of it, and get back to the performance level we were at last year," Wells said.
