RON CAPPS, COPENHAGEN CAMARO Z28, is No. 3 qualifier, with an e.t. of 4.889, and a top speed of 300.60 mph. Ron was in the staging lanes after John Force's track mph record run in the final qualifying session, and just before Cruz Pedregon's ultimate national elapsed time record. WERE YOU THINKING ABOUT FORCE'S RECORD RUN WHEN YOU GOT TO THE LINE? "Absolutely. Every time we roll this Camaro up there we want to go for low e.t. There's no reason why it shouldn't be a competition for low e.t. It's hardball out here right now. Funny Car is the toughest class out here. It's making it much more fun. There are 16 guys who can win the race tomorrow. It dropped a cylinder at 330 feet during the final qualifying run and never picked it back up. It just kind of dogged on through there. It didn't do anything exciting." Ron ran a 5.004/296.43 in that session.
CHUCK ETCHELLS, KENDALL/MA MA ROSA'S PIZZA/SUPERWINCH CAMARO Z28, is No. 5 qualifier, 4.939/308.00. "We continue to make good runs in the Camaro. We were a little soft for this morning's run, and stepped it up for the afternoon. It was on a good run until about the eighth-mile mark when it broke an input shaft. It was a freak thing -- there were only 24 runs on it, and we had only used one all last year! We have our work cut out for us tomorrow -- it will be a case of tough, tougher, toughest. But my team is aleady hard at work getting our Camaro ready, and we're looking to keep up our string of strong showings."
KURT JOHNSON, ACDELCO CAMARO Z28, is No. 9 qualifier, at 6.912/198.71. "We missed on that first qualifying with the ignition problems and that kind of threw us off. It was a test run in the heat of the day. We could have used it to gather some valuable information. Our nighttime run was pretty good, we were within two hundredths of the leader, and we were able to pick ip up this morning. We need to calm our car down a bit. Right now it just seems to be blowing the tires off. When the track's good it's fine, but when the surface starts going away, it spins the tires. For tomorrow, we're going to work on getting a handle on the Camaro and make some good consistent passes."
LARRY MORGAN, RAYBESTOS CAMARO, is in the field, at No. 16, 6.940/197.49.
Team Chevrolet drivers in Top Fuel are qualified 11th (Cristen Powell, 4.694/298.90) and 14th (Larry Dixon, 4.725/311.52).
