1999 NHRA Matco Tools SuperNationals Houston Raceway Park Final Report
NO TRICKS AND FEW TREATS FOR TEAM MOPAR AT NHRA MATCO TOOLS SUPERNATIONALS
Baytown, Texas, (October 3 1, 1999) - Team Mopar Top Fuel Dragster driven by Mike Dunn lost it in Round-One to Doug Herbert at the NHRA Matco Tools SuperNationals at Houston Raceway Park. Dunn currently has 1,210 points and is in sixth place,
In Pro Stock, Team Mopar drivers Darrell Alderman and Larry Morgan did not qualify. Team Amoco Dodge Avenger driven by Allen Johnson was eliminated by Tom Martino in Round-One.
In Funny Car, Dean Skuza, Matco Tools/Team Mopar Dodge Avenger was defeated by Jerry Tolliver in Round-One.
Mike Dunn, Team Mopar Top Fuel Dragster (10.590/80.28), lost to Doug Herbert (4.612/310.98) in Round-One.
"A frustrating first round loss for our Team Mopar Top Fuel Dragster to say the least. We had qualified great and held on to the number one spot all weekend. The clutch and fuel combination was right on the money as crew chief Ken Veney and the rest of the crew did a great job tuning the car. I really thought we could have won this race and throw a wrench in the points chase for some of the other competitors.
"We had basically set the car up to run about a 4.56 so we left the blower the same tuned off our previous run. Unfortunately the clutch was too aggressive on the run and yet the track temperature was within two degrees of yesterday's conditions. We didn't reset anything that would have made the car react the way it did so we are scratching our heads right now on why it smoked the tires. I wasn't expecting the season to be so up and down but that's the way it has turned out to be. Whatever we end up in the final points standings, I'm still proud at our team's accomplish mews and we will still try to end the season like it began by winning at Pomona.
Dean Skuza, Matco Tools/Team Mopar Dodge Avenger Funny Car (5.078/259.8 1), lost to Jerry Tolliver (5.057/298.73) in Round-One.
"Our team struggled in qualifying all weekend and only made one good run down the track. When you're faced with a good first round opponent, you need to have your game plan together. Our clutch setup has been giving us problems for most of the season. Anytime we think we have it sorted out, it throws us a curve ball.
"It was one of the closest races of the round as we lost by only one thousandth of a second. Our Matco Tools/Team Mopar Dodge Avenger really got out of shape about the 1000-foot mark made a move towards the other lane and I had to shut it down early. If I could have stayed in it longer we probably could have won the race. the car's tune-up was perfect and the whole crew did their jobs."
